Environment
Policy
Mitchel-Lincoln Packaging Ltd., along with its latest joint venture, New Forest Paper Mill, is committed to the future of the environment as well as to the community. We are keenly aware of our responsibility to help protect the environment in our manufacturing processes by minimizing the necessity to harvest trees and reducing any negative environmental impact this process may generate.
Recycling
Instead of harvesting trees, Mitchel-Lincoln reuses waste material to produce recycled corrugated paper products. The raw material from Mitchel-Lincoln’s New Forest Paper Mill is made from 100% recycled paper – mostly from fibers collected by municipal curbside collections (blue box programs), and industrial/commercial facilities. This method diverts 33,000 truckloads of paper waste annually that would have otherwise gone to landfills. It also saves the equivalent of 14 million mature trees per year that would have been cut down.
Environmental benefits of using recycled material instead of virgin pulp include:
- Forest preservation
- Waste diversion from landfills
- Pollution reduction during the manufacturing process
Reuse of waste as raw material helps to close the recycling loop.
Each year Canadian consumers purchase over 700 million batteries. Over 95% of these are non-rechargeable single use alkaline, zinc carbon or lithium batteries. Used disposable batteries, which are often thrown out with the household trash, account for over 17,000 tons of waste each year. While batteries only account for a small percentage of the waste stream, they can contain materials that are toxic, corrosive and damaging to the environment and human health. Through our battery recycling programme, Mitchel-Lincoln is helping to divert used batteries from the local landfill. Battery recycling containers, made available to our employees and customers, provide an attractive method of collecting and storing spent batteries prior to drop-off at an approved collection site.

New Forest Paper Mill
Innovation
New Forest Paper Mill began operations in April of 2006 and is a joint venture between Mitchel-Lincoln Packaging and Atlantic Packaging. The state-of-the-art Voith machine produces over 200,000 tons of liner and medium each year and has a trim width of 200".
This project involved the construction of a new paper manufacturing facility with over 250,000 square feet of floor area. The main press room is 72 feet high with three 40 ton cranes spanning 100 feet. All of the buildings are multi-level and house process equipment, presses, warehousing, and an aerobic water treatment facility.
Linerboard and Medium
New Forest Paper Mill uses old corrugated containers as raw material. The fiber is treated and cleaned of all extraneous materials such as staples, tape, wire, glass, gravel or dirt, styrofoam, and plastic. Once free of the non-fiber materials, the stock slurry is pumped to the paper machine. A uniform sheet is formed that is then slit and sent to Mitchel-Lincoln for converting into corrugated boxes.
